What is NAS/SEN?
We know that some pregnant women may struggle with substance abuse. Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) is a life-threatening chronic condition and is dangerous to all pregnant and postpartum women. In 2017, drug-related deaths were the leading cause of death to mothers during pregnancy or within one year afterwards. 75% of maternal drug-related deaths occur after the baby is born and the mother has been discharged. Pregnancy provides an important opportunity to identify and treat women with substance use disorders.
The NAS/SEN Project is designed to offer intensive case management services to pregnant and parenting families in Miami-Dade County who are impacted by substance abuse. The project is a partnership between Thriving Mind South Florida, Healthy Start Coalition of Miami-Dade, and the University of Miami, and is sponsored by the State of Florida, Department of Children & Families.
